Louisville Paving and Construction Company is a family-owned business with a rich history born from modest beginnings. Our story begins nearly a century ago, in 1919, when Joseph Michael Dougherty, a second-generation descendant of Irish immigrants, formed the Dougherty Coal Company. Joseph Michael's son, Joseph Thomas, joined the company soon after and continued to grow the business after his father's death in 1927. The Dougherty Coal Company flourished for decades until the availability of natural gas began replacing coal as the preferred method of heating homes.

In 1949, Joe's son, Jack Dougherty, joined the business. Using their current fleet of coal delivery trucks and a skilled work force, they invested in paving equipment, and Louisville Paving Company was born. The business focused on providing coal during the winter months and asphalt paving during the summer. The company continued to grow and in 1959 Jack's brother, Bill came on board. The Doughertys stopped delivering coal in 1967 to focus their full attention on the asphalt paving business.

Louisville Paving and Construction Company is now managed by John and Joe Dougherty, fourth-generation family members in the business. And the future looks bright as the next generation of family members are already in management positions. Although the foundation of Louisville Paving was built by the Dougherty family, we owe a great deal of credit to our family of employees. The dedication and professionalism they exhibit on the job every day continue the core values set forth four generations ago.
